Eye Care Basics

None of us are perfect…even when it comes to our eyes. The majority of individuals eventually experience some kind of vision problem due to the development, growth, or deterioration of their eyes or visual system.

Count yourself lucky if you see "20/20," however, be aware that there is much more to eye and vision health than good vision on the eye chart. Visual acuity (the clarity or sharpness of vision) is measured at a distance of 20 feet. If you have 20/20 vision, you can see clearly at 20 feet what should normally b e seen at that distance. If you have 20/100 vision, it means that you must be as close as 20 feet to see what a person with normal vision can see at 100 feet.

While the good old eye chart is useful for determining 20/20 vision, it says little about how well the two eyes work together, or the presence or absence of many serious eye diseases that have no affect on visual acuity until severe, permanent damage occurs. That is why a comprehensive eye health and vision examination is necessary.
