Background Information

American Optometric Association

The American Optometric Association (AOA) represents more than 34,000 doctors of optometry, optometry students and paraoptometric assistants and technicians in more than 6,500 communities across the country and in foreign countries.

The association was founded in 1898 and maintains offices in St. Louis, MO and metropolitan Washington, DC. Principal among the association's several missions is to improve the quality and availability of eye/vision care for all Americans. To help achieve this mission, the association helps its members conduct their practices in accordance with the highest standards of patient care and efficiency; and represents the optometric profession to government and other organizations related to health care.

A House of Delegates and an 11-member Board of Trustees (elected by the House of Delegates) governs the association. The House is composed of representatives of each state association, optometrists in Federal Service and students of optometry. It meets at an annual AOA Congress (held in June or July) to transact association business, establish association policy and elect officers.

The Board of Trustees is composed of the President, President-Elect, Vice-President, Secretary/Treasurer, Immediate Past President and six trustees and is empowered to conduct association business when the House is not in session.
