Lunch & Learn: Negotiating Employment Contracts

Before forming Practice Compliance Solutions in 2011, Dr. Joe DeLoach spent most of his optometric career in the management of ocular disease, especially retinal disease and glaucoma. He spent twenty years as Medical Director of one of the nation’s largest optometric referral centers, EyeCare and Surgery Center of North Texas.

As a former Clinical Professor at the University of Houston College of Optometry, he served as Regional Director of the Cedar Springs Eye Clinic and Community Eye Clinic—inner-city charity clinics that predominantly treat retinal disease and glaucoma. The clinics provide care for over 15,000 medical patients each year.

Dr. DeLoach has lectured extensively (over 3,000 hours) across the country, mainly in the management of glaucoma and retinal disease, medical reimbursement, and healthcare compliance laws. He served as Coursemaster for the University of Houston College of Optometry Glaucoma Symposium and has also served as Coursemaster of the Texas Professional Ethics Courses since their introduction in 2008.

Since 2011, following the formation of Practice Compliance Solutions—and the eventual 2025 merger with EyeCode Education and CodeSAFEPLUS to form Practice Performance Partners, a nationally recognized healthcare practice management company—Dr. DeLoach has spent the majority of his time consulting with optometric groups, the eyecare industry, state associations, and individual doctors in the areas of medical reimbursement and compliance with healthcare law.

BJ Avery serves as Chief Marketing Officer for Practice Performance Partners, a practice management company providing HIPAA, OSHA, and HR resources; insurance billing; practice auditing and management services; as well as education. She is also a managing partner in Practice Performance Partners.

She previously served as Executive Director of the Texas Optometric Association for 30 years. During her tenure with TOA, she designed and implemented statewide political strategies for eye doctors and continues to serve as a legislative consultant.

BJ teaches HIPAA, Medicare, Medicaid, and third-party management, billing and coding, as well as leadership and teambuilding. Prior to her work with TOA, BJ was a news reporter and broadcaster.
